I came, I saw, I wove. These two years have been an explosion of creativity, of change, seeing a total transformation from a latently creative person into who I am now- someone with actual skills and a lot more tactile textile experience.
History and anthropology are of huge interest to me, so exploring inspiration from 17th century Spanish embroidery to 19th century English print designs was thrilling, but it is weave which stands out as my favourite, my specialism, my niche and my intended future. The idea of actually making cloth, something so basic, so fundamental, so atavistically pleasing; using my hands to create something from nothing in a timeless art stretching back millennia- dilates my pupils, and gives me wings. Imagine becoming a tradition-bearer by creating?
I can only hope that pursuing weave at Heriot Watt for a third and fourth year will furnish the opportunity to develop and let me fly into my future as a full-time weaver.
