Within Fashion design, I would say visual communication is my strongest area. By visual communication, I mean using silhouettes, colour, texture, and details in order to create visuals that tell a story or share a concept. I study fashion as garment creation allows me to have the ability to create visual 3-dimensional decor that can enhance certain aspects of the wearer, whether that’s style, identity, personality etc. Whenever I am tasked to design a garment or collection, I begin by creating the character I’m designing for. For example this year, I was tasked to create a garment collection inspired by my chosen theme, magpies. For this I took the magpie species and reimagined them as humans I’d be designing clothes for. I look at the magpies' characteristics, their anatomy, their habitat and social structures. For this theme, I imagined a haunting family of criminals and petty theifs, living in a run-down abandoned city, decorated in silver trinkets they have stolen from the public, the shapes were sharp to match their aggressive natures, while other silhouettes were draped and drab, as a connotation on their haunting/superstitious history.
