TRENDING: Zero-Waste sustainable fashion
By Karyn Robb,, HND Technology
What is it?
It’s they way clothing is designed, manufactured and distributed in environmentally sustainable and ethical ways and methods with minimal waste
Why is it needed?
Fashion production is responsible for more carbon emissions than both maritime and aviation combined. Millions of tons of clothing and textiles are sent to landfill every year. It contributes to 20% of the world’s industrial water pollution. It is so dependent on water, clothing production directly contributes to water shortages in many areas. The cost does not just stop at an environmental level, the human cost of fashion production is staggering, millions of sweatshop workers have no human rights and child labour is common. Used and abused in the name of fashio
Did you know?
An average piece of fabric can take years to decompose, depending on what material ,it’s made from.
When fabric decomposes it releases huge amounts of CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, but also some modern materials are not very biodegradable, some taking a staggering 200 years to decompose.
How can you help?
Up cycle, reuse and remake clothing
Buy second hand
Donate used but still useful clothing
Buy from brands that have sustainable , ethical policies and practices
Buy clothes made from natural fibres
Buy fewer clothes
These things all help to create a sustainable future and promote a more circular economy.
Fashion technology students took this to the next level by deconstructing garments destined for landfill and transforming them into useable garments.
Reduce, reuse, refashion!
