After years of longing to put my creative skills to use I finally took the leap, at the time I did not have a clear goal in mind, but I know studying Fashion Technology was in no doubt the best decision. I finally found my true passion in life and I also found myself, being able to express myself through the drawing process and creative tasks has given me the confidence in knowing who I am and knowing my self-worth within my work.
The whole process of learning excites me, the projects which interested me most have been designing and creating capsule collections for brands HYKE and ACNE this has allowed me to discover my talents within the design process, I am now discovering who I am as a designer and creator of fashion. My key skills of precision pattern cutting and manufacturing of garments from design to final product have excelled throughout my time of study. Every new project enables me to achieve more skills, I love these challenges and strive to achieve every goal put my way.
I have been inspired by the knowledge my lecturers have and thrive to reach this level. Learning so much through my experience at college has given me the skillset to take my journey to the next level studying at Herriot Watt University, I aim to have the skills, abilities, and talents to open different career choices for me within the fashion and technology industry.

After a 20-year career in music I bring an understanding of composition movement, texture and storytelling to my work through my construction and design process, drawing inspiration from the human condition, artistic process, practice and structure.
I have really enjoyed researching themes and finding the thread to inform my designs. I have enjoyed creative problem solving during the design process.
I am looking forward to continuing learning the rules in Fashion technology and design so that in time I can learn to break them to develop my artistic practice.

It’s incredible how much we and the world we live in changes but my goal when creating garments is to make pieces that will last throughout those transitions with someone. I love to use traditional crafts such as knitting and crochet and bring new life to them with bold colours and designs so that when combined with my newfound sewing ability create contemporary articles that stand out.
My favourite aspect of the course is the hands-on problem solving that it takes to turn a garment from a design to a real life. It’s been really gratifying over the past three years to see my sewing and pattern making skills develop to a place where I can make what’s in my head look as good as I imagined it to be.
I hope to further improve upon my sewing ability and get more practical experience in a work environment through an apprenticeship or internship.

You shouldn’t have to compromise looking good in order to be modest. I have always had an eye for fashion however when it comes to modesty, I’ve always found that there’s a lack of modest- wear that actually has an element of fashion/trend in it.
Hence why, my focus is to blend the two worlds together and create pieces that represent both; modesty and fashion which is what I’m working on with my current project.
I would say i have the mind of an artist. I notice the smallest details in something so therefore tend to find a lot of faults, which is why I’m at fashion technology. I aim for perfection which then challenges me and I experiment and make lots of mistakes as I’m toiling- find answers from those mistakes and therefore learn from them. I have an eye for colour, I like to mix vintage with modern and I get personal with my projects. I want the pieces I design/create to mean something.

Clothes were made for us to wear, they were not made to wear us. My passion is to create garments that empower you when you wear them. from the drafting process to the sewing of the final garment
The next step in my creative career are my final years of education at heriot watt, with the short term hopes of going into the industry and long term hopes of starting my own business.

I love stories. Whether they be found in a dramatic movie or thoughtful book.
The garments I create tell my story, a story of the journey I took from studying at home relying on my own resourcefulness and hand finishing skills to create my designs to now having the freedom to apply all I've learned over the past two years using modern technology and professional equipment to bring to life designs i had previously only ever dreamed of.
I plan to continue telling stories through the garments I make, whether that be bringing the story of a client to life through bespoke garments, for characters of stage and screen through costume or showing my process and work through short films for my social media.
