Millies work focuses on story telling, re-modeling historical dress to address modern narratives. Her theme challenge her knowledge of tailoring & construction through the use distorted pattern cutting and references to traditional tailoring.
I think the way clothes can help us create a story is truly a beautiful experience. The want to look attractive is such a human desire, but beauty is so subjective and seeing how people interpret this idea or certain things such as times or places is so fascinating. i used inspiration from past decades, the political influences of the time and the influence of youth and subculture into my work. Using fashion design rules and altering them to create new exciting pieces with their essence nodding to crafts and styles of previous times.
Congratulations to Astrid Larsgaard Cairns and Carolyn Murchie on winning the Incorporation of Tailoring Award for technology. The judges were impressed by their remarkable attention to detail, creativity, and ability to fuse classic tailoring techniques with cutting-edge technology. We are thrilled to have such incredibly talented students like Astrid and Carolyn at our institution and we look forward to watching them continue to excel in their future endeavors.
Reflecting on her learning Astrid hopes to incorporate the principles of tailoring in her future designs:
I am an avid and tactile learner and enjoy presenting myself with new challenges. Having a particular fondness for traditional design methods with tried and true rules, I really engaged with the bespoke tailoring unit. The physical manipulation of fabric, intricate hand stitching and intuitive pattern cutting has a timeless quality that resonates deeply with me, and feels like something I could see myself doing in the future — albeit with my own personal twist.
As Carolyn, reflects on her esteemed tailoring award and what it means to work on the craft of tailoring:
I enjoy the chance to work with my hands, manipulating fabrics to help my designs come to life, particularly the intricacies of hand sewing and embellishing with embroidery or beading. Working with different types of fabrics and getting to learn different sewing techniques throughout this course has been my favourite part of my learning experience.
Overall, the competition showcased a variety of projects incorporating fashion, textiles, and accessories, highlighting the groundbreaking and cutting-edge work being produced by students in The School of Fashion and Textiles. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up!
